For the year as a whole, PC sales fell by 3.2 percent to 352.4 million units. The industry is struggling because consumers prefer to use smartphones and tablets. In addition, companies are holding back on buying new computers in view of the uncertain economic situation.

The decline in the christmas quarter was even more pronounced than expected: IDC had expected a decline of 4.4 percent. Even the freshly launched microsoft operating system windows 8 has not been able to reverse the trend. A total of 89.8 million pcs have been sold. However, the market could recover somewhat this year, among other things, if the prices for the dark ultrabook laptops fall, predicted IDC analyst jay chou late thursday. In addition, most of the devices presented so far had not yet fully exploited the possibilities of windows 8.

Hewlett-packard was still the world’s largest PC manufacturer in the last quarter of the year, according to IDC, with a market share of 16.7 percent in the fourth quarter, although HP sold 0.6 percent fewer units. But the chinese rival lenovo, with a market share of 15.7 percent, has already crept close to HP. The chinese are on course to become the world leader: their PC sales rose by 8.2 percent in the christmas quarter. Dell defended its third place with a market share of 10.6 percent, although sales fell by more than a fifth. One reason was that number four acer was hit even harder, with sales down 28 percent.

In the u.S. Domestic market, hewlett-packard’s performance has recently been much better. Market share jumped from 23 to 27 percent in the fourth quarter. IDC explains this by the fact that HP jumped on the windows 8 bandwagon more courageously than other manufacturers and pumped many devices with the new operating system into the market. Dell held second place with just under one-fifth of the market, and apple is number three with 11.4 percent. The mac manufacturer, accustomed to success, was able to increase its market share once again, but had to accept a dark minus of 0.2 percent in sales.

Over the whole of 2012, hewlett-packard remained in the lead with a worldwide market share of 16.5 percent, ahead of lenovo with 14.9 percent and dell with eleven percent.
